On- Campus Workshops

This page contains a partial list of workshops that ACUO staff can present on your campus.  See Individual Services to find out how to arrange for a Campus Visit.

Developing a Faculty Project- 1 hour

You’ve completed your degree, your course preparation workload is at a manageable level.  Now you want to pursue grants.  Where do you start?  What kind of work do you want to do?  Is it fundable?  How do you choose a topic?  What’s ‘hot’ and what’s not?  What parts of the process can you impact and what elements are out of your control?  Where do you invest time and money in the process?  This workshop presents one approach for developing an idea into a definable, and hopefully fundable, project.  It is designed for faculty who have completed their doctorate since 1993 and now wish to pursue professional development though grant support.

Developing an Institutional/Collaborative Project - 1 hour

Where does your department need to be in five years?  How do these goals and objectives relate to other departments? to the university? to the community? to the nation?  How do you breakdown these goals and objectives into individual projects?  How do you evaluate their potential for external support?  This workshop will look at larger departmental and institutional projects, those that require the coordinated effort of more than two faculty members or administrators.

Getting your Project Funded: Writing a Successful Proposal- 1 hour

How do you approach a grant making organization?  What information should you convey?  How should it be presented?  How much detail is needed in a budget?  How do you handle cost sharing?  From whom do you get letters of support?  These and other questions will be addressed using a step-by-step approach to proposal writing.  This workshop will highlight some strategies for success in proposal development, covering various proposal formats from a two-page letter of inquiry up to a full 40-page proposal.  We will discuss common elements of successful proposals, the required components, and some of the pitfalls to avoid.  We will also examine the review process of different federal programs and private foundations, helping you better tailor your proposal to the people who will make the decision.

International Projects- Curricular- 1 hour

The workshop focuses on federal and private sources of funding that will support the addition of international components to your curriculum.  We will discuss programs from the Department of Education (Fulbright Hayes), the Department of Defense (National Security Education Program), the Department of State (Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs programs), and the National Science Foundation, along with the Tinker Foundation, and the Luce Foundations, and other private country specific programs.

Science Projects- Research & Curriculum- 1 hour

This workshop for predominately teaching institutions will examine grant programs of the  National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Kresge Foundation, the Dreyfus Foundation, Research Corporation, and others.

 Fellowships Opportunities- 1 hour

This session will discuss various fellowships opportunities including NEH Fellowships, Fulbright Awards, American Philosophical Society Fellowships, IREX, AAUW, and other relevant fellowships.  We will discuss issues of timing and the appropriate way to approach each organization.
